RESUMO

Aryl hybrocardon receptor (AhR) activation plays a key role in the pathomechanism of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD)-induced defective spatial structure of teeth caused by disordered collagen synthesis. The aim of this study was to identify the influence of dioxins present in female Buffalo rats on the dental structure of their offspring's in the neonatal period and the potential of α-tocopherol and acetylsalicylic acid in curbing post-dioxin hard tissue defects. Research material consisted of molar teeth (n=40) of rat pups which had been given a single dose of TCDD and were then treated with tocopherol or acetylsalicylic acid for 3 weeks. In the offspring of rat dams exposed to TCDD, ameloblasts and odontoblasts were less developed in comparison with the control group and less dynamic angiogenesis in the area of dental papilla was observed. In the pups of TCDD-exposed mothers, a smaller number of AhR was found in amelogenic and odontoblastic cells, whereas in the pups of mothers exposed to TCDD followed by tocopherol and acetylsalicylic acid treatment, the expression of AhR in ameloblasts and odontoblasts increased. We conclude that tocopherol and acetylsalicylic acid treatment exerts a protective effect on the TCDD-induced structural defects of tooth tissue.

RESUMO

The paper presents a review of results concerning the role of host cysteine proteases, especially cathepsin B and cystatins in periodontal pathogenesis. Special attention was paid to the potential use of those biochemical parameters as biomarkers of periodontal disease activity.

RESUMO

Intraocular lenses were investigated by MRI to obtain information about the quality of this method. In experimental studies, seven lenses of between 0 and 30 diopters were visualized. By MRI it was possible to differentiate the various diameters of lenses. It was not possible to discriminate the material of the intraocular lenses. After these first studies the eyes of two corpses and eight patients were investigated. Because of the resolution of MRI it was possible to tell the diopter of implanted lenses. However, by use of MRI in the regular position, a tilting or decentration of the intraocular lens was demonstrated.

RESUMO

Recently, scleral fixation has been used in posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation in the absence of the posterior capsule. Fixation is achieved with a suture through the ciliary sulcus and sclera at a horizontal or vertical position. To achieve good functional results, the optical portion of the lens must lie on the optical axis. Unilateral lens implantation in the absence of the posterior capsule was performed with scleral fixation in 48 patients. Follow-up ranged from 14 months to 2.6 years. The position of the posterior chamber lens was defined in relation to the limbus and the pupillary margin. There was no evidence of lens decentration in miosis. Under conditions of extreme mydriasis, decentration of less than 1.0 mm was found in four patients; four others had approximately 1.5 mm of decentration. Magnetic resonance imaging was used to determine lens position in some cases. Scleral fixation is a viable alternative for implantation of posterior chamber lenses in the absence of the posterior capsule.

RESUMO

2979 inhabitants of Wroclaw aged from 18-80 years, in this 1581 women and 1398 men, have been examined stomatologically. Clinical material has been collected and analysed, average values of D, M, F in women and men in 5 age groups have been calculated. Indicators D/DMF, M/DMF and M/DMF as well as percentage of people under examination with toothlessness and frequency they take advantage of stomatological care have been calculated. The results point out higher D/DMF medicinal demand in men than in women. Along with the age of persons under examination percentage of extracted teeth in the DMF, M/DMF values increases and the proportion of effective healing to the demand F/DMF decreases. Over 80% of persons under examination take occasionally advantage of stomatological care without pain symptoms.
